Alma Bike Ferry
This 30-foot-long bike ferry, unique in all of Canada, is an important link in the Véloroute des Bleuets (Blueberry Bikeway) which encircles giant Lac St-Jean 200 kilometers north of Québec City. The ferry carries cyclists and their bikes free of charge all summer long across the Grande Décharge River, bypassing a narrow, heavily-traveled bridge farther downstream.
Luckily we spent two consecutive nights in Alma on the 2001 Grand Tour. On our "day off", after riding the bike ferry, we followed the Véloroute across a series of dams to a beautiful natural sand beach on Lac St-Jean.
