Following the Saguenay Fjord
Day 3 gave us our first look at the Saguenay Fjord, a 50-mile-long glacier-cut chasm that carries the waters of Lac St-Jean out to the Gulf of St. Lawrence. There is no road along either side, so we had to climb up into the hills. Here's the view behind us from the top of the first big climb (right).

After a lunch stop in the picturesque fjordside village of Ste-Rose-du-Nord, and another big climb, we descended into the Ste-Marguerite valley, which parallels the Saguenay and is almost fjordlike but has enough dry land for a road that follows the river. We enjoyed cycling a wonderfully flat road surrounded by near-vertical cliffs (below right) and stopped to check out Emile Savard's folk art (below left).
