Canyon Ferry Lake, Montana

Canyon Ferry Lake is a 28-mile long artificial lake that was formed by damming a section of the Missouri River just to the east of Helena, Montana. It typically freezes up in December. Canyon Ferry usually has an extended period of black ice, because the region receives very little precipitation.
For the best early-season ice, go to Lake Helena, a smaller and shallower lake close to the city limits. It's usually frozen by Thanksgiving.
