Iceboats on Lake Sunapee
Left photo: The wind was dying on Lake Sunapee, so this sailor had to push his iceboat along. In a good breeze these boats reach speeds of 50 mph or better. The letters DN on the sail are for "Detroit News", the newspaper that in the 1930s published a set of do-it-yourself iceboat plans. The DN class is now the largest in the world.
Right photo: An iceboat cockpit is long and narrow. You lie down on your back with the tiller in your lap.
