Notecards
Portage Lake and its namesake glacier lie about 50 miles southeast of Alaska's largest city, Anchorage. Portage Lake is a popular destination for summer tourists, who travel up the lake by boat to catch a glimpse of the glacier. In winter the lake is typically deserted except for an occasional ice skater or skate-skier. But Thanksgiving weekend 2006 was different. Hundreds of skaters were out in below-zero temperatures enjoying miles of black ice 18 inches thick, right up to the edge of the glacier.
